William Robert John Barnard was born a British subject and became a US citizen in 1964. His eclectic style reflects a curious meld of his British and American sensibilities.
Barnard’s work is intriguing. His paintings are vigorous and aggressive, sometimes amusing and always powerful. Regard for space, color and symbol is clear, but lest his work be considered academic Barnard has let into his experience that elusive element we call intuition. And as that experience comes to bear on his canvases, they become works of art - testimony to his own exceptionally rich and varied experiences. As Barnard puts it:
"My contemporaries and I have lived through a period of the most extraordinary social and technological changes in history, and these notes offer glimpses of my particular ethos stemming from my particular life."
